Great product, but a bit pricy and not very stylish

Posted by Kyle on Apr 7th 2021

As far as functionality goes, the SSDS3 is great. Having a TurboGrafx-16 flash cart, a Turbo CD ODE, and RGB video all in one is fantastic. Haven't had any troubles with any game I've tried, and it looks great with HD Retrovision component cables (they're not "officially" supported, but they work just fine). Pairs wonderfully with the jailbar removal mod!

I'm using mine on a North American TG-16 and it is a VERY tight fit - I had to completely remove the shell and plug in the PCB to make sure I didn't bend any pins, and then screw the shell back on after it was inserted into the expansion slot. And I still couldn't tighten the screws all the way without the plastic bending. I would NOT recommend trying to insert this with the shell on, even with the screws loosened.

In addition, the product just looks... strange on a North American TG-16. This was clearly designed for a PC Engine where it fits and looks much better. For a product this expensive, I wish there was a design that would look and fit better on North American TG-16 systems.

That brings me to the price... this is pretty expensive, even as far as classic game enthusiast equipment goes. I've bought ODEs and flash carts for other consoles for less than half of what the SSDS3 costs. However, there is simply no other all-in-one solution like this for the system.

All in all, those small complaints aren't enough to dock this product any points. If you're a TurboGrafx/PC Engine enthusiast, the SSDS3 is a MUST and I highly recommend it. Just be careful installing it. Stone Age Gamer also shipped it very quickly!

"honestly at this point you may want to just buy a pcengine for it. fits fine on my core."

Posted by Thomas Bollig on Apr 4th 2021

The title is an actual quote from a thread I made when Rondo of Blood crashed yet again and I looked for help on how to fix it. I really want to love the SSDS3, I really do, but it just doesn't work with US TG-16s very well at all. Mine constantly crashes in the middle of nearly every game I try and it absolutely loves to bend and push in the pins on the expansion port (and they weren't misaligned or bent prior to trying to put the SSDS3 on, this TG-16 had never had anything in its expansion port before). I hate having to leave this type of review because in the brief moments that it DOES work, it's amazing! The games look amazing coming out of my OSSC and they play just as well! I almost forget all the troubles and frustration I've had the whole time until the game crashes and I'm plunged back into the depths of trying to get this thing to work yet again. At such a premium price point this amount of trouble is just unacceptable, this thing really needed a US TG-16 adapter or shell option. For something that's supposed to be plug and play, it really fails at both plugging AND playing! Oh well, guess I need a CoreGrafx to get this to work, on top of having to buy a controller adapter and a new ac adapter!

Great replacement after my TurboGrafX CD died!

Posted by Aaron Lambert on Apr 1st 2021

This thing is absolutely amazing!! I have a few notes to anyone purchasing this. 1. If you are using it on a TG16, loosen the screws that are closest to the connector a little bit before installing and be VERY CAREFUL not to bend the console pins when pushing the unit on, it can be very easily done. 2. This does NOT come with the A/V cable so you will have to purchase one separately. The best cable to purchase is the brand Old Skool and it's the model 2 SEGA Genesis connector. Most third party cables do not have the connector wired correctly and you'll only get audio from the left side (right side no audio). 3. The left and right audio channels are reversed so when you plug the cable in, red goes to white and white goes to red. Other than that, this thing plays CD games better than the original hardware if you ask me! ADPCM audio sounds a thousand times better on the Super SD System 3 than it does on a TGCD unit! Some games that use FMV video like Sherlock Holmes have some issues. On mine It Came from the Desert works but Sherlock Holmes audio is off for some reason, could be my rip though. Rondo of Blood and Ys IV Dawn of Ys run amazing. All of the Ys games run great which was my main focus. Highly recommended!!

The best solution for original hardware

Posted by Chris B on Mar 30th 2021

I'm new to the PC Engine world. I had been planning to play a few HuCard and Super CD-ROM games, but after watching some MLiG videos, that list kept growing and growing. The games are pricier now and mostly in the hands of collectors, so if you want to play on original hardware, this is a better choice than the Turbo Everdrive. I have it paired with a CoreGrafx and HD Retrovision Genesis cables; basically it's plug and play.

A+ for the product and the service

Posted by Isaac S. on Jan 7th 2021

This is the ultimate solution for playing both HuCard and CD based games on your PC Engine or TurboGrafx-16, and I can't recommend it enough. My first unit, unfortunately, was defective, but Stone Age Gamer went the extra mile to make things right and exchanged it for a new unit at no cost. Since then, I have had no issues. Please note that this does work with the US TurboGrafx-16, but it is a tigher fit than the PC-Engine, so you may need to loosen the screws on the unit a bit to keep it from being such a tight fit.

Great option for RGB + Flash Cart

Posted by Sebastien Lefebvre on Nov 14th 2020

The functionalities of the unit are phenomenal. RGB Out, HuCard and CD work flawlessly. There's only two things I would change on it. 1: I had to disassemble the SSDS3 to be able to plug it in my TG16 because the connector was misaligned with the pins of the console. 2: The software to set the thumbnails and info of each game is overly complicated and doesn't work correctly. I have many images that just show up as a pixelated glitch square. Other than that, I love the thing and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Blown Away by What This System Can Do!

Posted by Dave Nesvacil on Nov 12th 2020

The Super SD System 3 is an amazing system in a small form factor that attaches to your PC Engine. With a built-in CD-ROM, you can play nearly the whole library of games for TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine. I also was amazed at how little space it took up when it was all together. Overall, you're getting great value for your money. Highly recommended!
