    SSDS3 after 2 months

Posted by Stephen Schneider on Jul 27th 2020

Works as advertised and reads every ROM I have thrown at it. Only gripe is some games do not support the "In-game system menu". Not that big of a deal.

The SSDS3 is not perfect, but firmware updates could get it close!

Posted by Chad Davis on Jun 26th 2019

Keeping the CDROM drive on your PCE/TG-16 running is quite a chore given leaking caps, rotting middle gears and failing lasers. This is why the SSDS3 from TerraOnion is such an essential product for any fan of the system. The bottom line is that this product does what it says it does, and it does it well. I will go over a few things that I feel are important to note and a few annoyances that I have found with the system. I am old school gamer and use a CRT fed by a composite signal for my video. I can’t comment on the RGB output, but the newest version is reported to have issues present in earlier models addressed. I can tell you that the composite output is clear and crisp and has no video noise present. If you experience video noise, you might check your power supply. If you are using a switching power supply, that is your problem. Find an original linear power supply and that video noise will disappear. The line level audio is again clear and crisp with very little background noise. Yes, when the “CD” is accessed, you can hear noise from apparent cross talk from the digital bus to the analog audio. Ideally, this noise wouldn’t be there. But, honestly, it isn’t that bad..the actual CDROM makes much more and louder noise when seeking. The digital noise is only audible when there are silent moments in the game, this usually only occurs at the initial loading. As a side note about audio: If you are missing your right channel of audio, it is not the SSDS3. It is your AV cable. Many cables are wired incorrectly and use the mono channel, which the SSDS3 doesn’t use. I had two of these cables that didn’t work correctly. I purchased an Old Skool brand cable that worked fine. As for SD cards, a 128GB card will most likely be all that you need. If you speak/read Japanese, then get a 256GB card to fit the entire library. Get a San Disc brand to avoid issues. One of my annoyances is the SD card slot. It is kind of a pain to insert and remove. Another annoyance is the font that is used in the menu system is difficult to read. A firmware update to give you font choices would be nice. The last annoyance I have is with the Game Database utility used to add thumbnails for all your games isn’t the most user friendly application. Again, something that can be fixed. Overall, I think that the things that annoy me about the SSDS3 are quite minor and can be addressed with firmware updates. If you have the funds available, you can’t go wrong picking up an SSDS3!

    Super SD System 3

You can purchase this device at https://shop.terraonion.com/en/ for 240 Euros with shipping. It comes out to roughly $300 US. Option number two: you can buy from my favorite video game store https://stoneagegamer.com/ for $299 US plus shipping. The advantage of buying it from Stone Age Gamer is that you get it shipped faster, and if there is an issue, you can call them for support. I had a minor issue with the audio and they worked with me and found out it was a cable issue. They gave me a free cable and a new unit! So what does this thing do for $300? Everything! It first and foremost emulates the CD-ROM unit allowing PC Engine and Turbo Grafx 16 CDs to be played on either system (all region free). The device plugs into the back of either a TG-16 or a PC Engine where the CD-ROM would plug in. It has a micro SD (up to 256gb supported but 128gb is plenty of space) slot on the side to put the CD images on. As if CD support wasn't enough, you can also read TG-16 and PC Engine HuCards from this device! Oh yeah, and it has direct RGB out the back, using a Genesis / Megadrive 2 cable. Also, it gets its power from the console so it requires no external power! It also has no moving parts. I forgot to mention that it has the PC Engine Arcade Card built in also and a handy green LED that flashes showing the loading from the SD card. When you power the system on with the Super SD System 3 attached, it will take you to a menu system where you can load all your games. This device works flawlessly and I would highly recommend it to anyone that is considering getting a DUO or a CD-Rom attachment. Lets face it, this is the way most everyone will get to play all the exotic, expensive games that you can't afford. Well worth the $300 investment. Highly recommended!

    Framemeister users beware!

Posted by JS on Nov 21st 2018

My initial experience with the SSDS3 was very negative. I experienced a great deal of visual issues when using this unit on my Framemeister. The visual noise was very distracting and upsetting. I ended up sending it to a retro modding website to put Voltar's new video board in it. That still didn't clear up the visual noise on my Framemeister, so I ended up buying an OSSC. A small fortune later, it is functional and has a beautiful RGB image (through the OSSC)! I don’t know if I can recommend this to Framemeister users. However, if you use an OSSC or have a good CRT/PVM set up, you will likely not be disappointed. It is still quite frustrating that there were poor quality components used in this unit (analog to digital converter and video board), requiring additional boards and alternative scalers to fully utilize the advertised features. I’m happy to finally have a way to play some of these expensive games, but given the price tag, I wish it were designed with quality in mind.
