Does your Virtual Boy have Lines in the image?

Unfortunately, Nintendo didn't have longevity in mind when they made the original Virtual Boy.  The LED eye PCBs are attached with a flimsy ribbon cable that is glued into place.  In the past 25 years, that glue has weakened and resulted in thousands of existing unit failures.

Unlike existing solutions that melt or patch the 25-year-old lackluster cable, the VIRTUAL RIBBON is a 100% replacement adapter board that solders into place and is VERY sturdy.  It's an upgrade designed to outlive the weak humans that dare to explore the realm of the VIRTUAL BOY.

A great product for Nintendo Virtual Boy. The Virtual Ribbon Replacement Kit is made to fix the display glitches. It comes with a clear and detailed installation instructions, but requires a little bit of soldering skills to apply, but the final effect is long lasting and removing he display issue. A must for every Nintendo Virtual Boy user!

    Virtual Ribbon Replacement

A solid product that does exactly what it was designed for. I have used a few other options/mods on the market but this one is by far the most robust in design layout and quality. Soldering the parts is not the trickiest of jobs, but you do need to have some know-how and be confident in your skills. Highly recommend watching installation videos and buying the Virtual Ribbon EZ Mount. StoneAgeGamer came though again with prompt shipping and stellar packaging. Looking forward to making more order with them!

    Freakin awesome

Overall this thing is great. It`s high quality and was thought out very well. Its made so you can either use the diode array housing to align the board or you can use the jig thats available for around $10. I opted for the jig it saved me from the additional disassembly of removing the housing. The jig works great for a 3D printed part. I wish the quality on the print was a little better. The layer lines made it difficult to remove the diode arrays after soldering the board on. But that is me nitpicking. All the solder joints lined up perfectly. The board is made so anyone with minimal electrical soldering experience can do the job. The video segasonicfan has along with the silkscreen on the board makes it almost foolproof for those with smc soldering skills. Anyway to wrap this up it works great, the quality is top notch, and its well thought out and easy to assemble. I would definitely recommend this for all virtual boys. I will definitely be saving more virtual boys with product. Just as soon as its back instock.

    Tricky mod, but works great

Posted by Marcus on Oct 17th 2022

This is a fantastic mod for the Virtual Boy. It’s far sturdier than the original garbage ribbon cables and provides crisp, clean images for the Virtual Boy if done correctly.

However, this isn’t an easy mod. Please do yourself a favor and watch SSFD’s how-to video. If you don’t think you can do it, please just pay the extra for the install service. If you choose to do it, though, here are my tips for it: you NEED a chisel tip. Getting heat down at the seam where the two PCBs meet is very important, and fat tips don’t like to give a lot of heat there. On that note, don’t mess around with the tips of the traces on the original PCB. Those traces WILL move around if they’re heated too much, and when that happens, it gets so much harder. Next, make absolutely sure your alignment is spot on. If you’re off and you start tacking the mod down to the display, you’re probably not going to safely get it off for a readjustment (I found that one out the hard way). And don’t skimp on that multimeter either. You’ll probably never know you’re off on a pin connection without it.

Again, though, this mod is well worth it and will definitely make your headaches crystal clear again.
