    Super HD System 3 Pro

    Posted by A So-So Upgrade on Jan 26th 2022

To review this product, a few points need to be made first and then separated by the users who would buy this.

    Let's give an overview first:

Firstly, as it's predecessor the Super SD System 3, this device plays all Hu-Cards and CD games (CD-ROM2, Super CD-ROM2, or Arcade CD-ROM2). It also includes a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive 2 port for composite and RGB out with the appropriate cables. That remains the same but with better tweaks to the video and audio.

However, new to this incarnation of the device is an HDMI output for straight HDMI video and audio without the need of a scaler such as an OSSC, Framemeister, or Retrotink 5x. Also new to this device is support for Supergrafx games on a standard PC Engine device. The device uses the FPGA on board to emulate the remaining chips the SuperGrafx games need to function, much like the device already does for the Arcade CD-ROM.

This is where we encounter the first problem. Normally, you'd be able to play Hu-Cards still while this is attached to your PC Engine. But for SuperGrafx, since there's a conflict, you will not be able to play your SuperGrafx Hu-Cards while this is attached to your SuperGrafx. So if you're looking to use this on a SuperGrafx, you'd be better off buying the original Super SD System 3 from here and using that. You won't get HDMI out or SuperGrafx emulation, but you really don't need it if you have a scaler.

Another problem is price. This device is $320. When you factor in everything it does, it's a great price and if you don't already have the Super SD System 3 and want to play on original hardware, the price is a steal and highly recommended.

That being said if you already have a Super SD System 3 and don't care about an HDMI port or SuperGrafx support, then it's just best to keep what you have for now until support stops for this unit. In my opinion, there's nothing justifying paying another $130 to upgrade.

If you already use a MiSTer device and don't care about original hardware too much, you don't need this at all. Your device literally does everything this device does and is constantly updated.

My small gripe personally is that this doesn't come in different colors and instead of a neutral smoke color like last time, they went with this solid blue. Especially when we have replacement shells available for the PC Engine, the blue really stands out and not in a good way.

So in conclusion, with better devices like the MiSTer out there, a predecessor with better support on a SuperGrafx console, and the $130 upgrade cost for existing users just for an HDMI port and an FPGA core for a SuperGrafx, I'm just giving this 3 stars.

However as I said if you don't have a MiSTer or one of these devices and want to play everything on your PC Engine console, then I give this four stars.

It's just not for everyone when there's better solutions out there for the money.

    Super HD System 3 PRO

What a deal! At first $300 may seem like a high bar to clear, but when you consider the cost of the PC Engine library, not to mention the absurd prices of the CD based games, and the added benefit of multiple ways to output crisp image and sound, this adapter more than pays for itself. Personally, I love playing on original hardware on a good old fashion CRT. This product was the perfect solution to my needs. The added feature of an HDMI output meant that I could play my games on any tv or monitor in the house. I'd recommend this to retro game fans who want to get the most out of their PC Engine.

    Great Product !

Posted by Rodolphe Busuttil-Decousus on Jan 4th 2022

I think that this new Version of the Product for the PC engine is the most complete way of enjoying to the max potential an add on to the console. It works perfectly well and the guys at Terraonion did a really good documentation to cover every new feature. I really recommend this new version, especially if you had the previous one. The HDMI Video Quality is stunning and I like the a fact that you can change some of the video output parameters if you like your scanlines. I think also that the RGB Analog ouput is also still very good and to consider in your setup. Great Product, Great Value and a lot of work from Terraonion.

    Great upgrade over Turbo Everdrive

Posted by Ryan on Dec 22nd 2021

I already had a Turbo Everdrive I used on my US TG16 and Turbo Express and love it, but I always wished it could play CD and supergrafx games too. I picked up a Japanese PC Engine a while back and went back and forth if it was worth buying one of these since I already owned the Everdrive. I'm so glad I did! So many great games in the CD library I was missing out on. I still use the Everdrive for playing Turbo Express on the go, but this was without question a worthwhile upgrade.

While it is fairly pricey, this is one of the easier to setup flashcart/ODE that exists on the market (not that the others are hard, but the device is very drag-and-drop). The only thing I would warn someone purchasing this device is that you REALLY need to make sure the CD game files are in a .CUE and .BIN format or they won't work. Oh, and the HDMI out and RGB out are awesome and look great. Couldn't be happier with this product.

Great product, some digital assembly required.

Posted by Ryan Olive on Nov 13th 2021

If you've never used flash carts or FPGA based hardware emulation, be prepared to do some research to get this working. SAG support is great, but to get this running without already knowing might require the less impressive Terra Onion support. They'll direct you to their barely moderated discord where random users can either help or hurt you for free.

Once you get all the required firmware updates and software, you're in for a great time. The picture running through hdmi looks outstanding, the sound is great, and the colors really pop. They're not at 100% software support for CD games, but a good majority seem to run as intended. Hucard games don't need to use the fpga so those all work perfectly.

If you have a TG16, PC Engine, or Core Grafx but no means to play CD games, this might be for you. It works great for both HDMI and S-video. Just keep in mind it's only plug and play for Hucards. Playing disc games takes some work, you might want to pass on this if you were hoping for something quick an easy.

I've never used a device like this before. I was mocked on the discord for not knowing anything beforehand, but eventually got my unit running Turbo CD games. It wasn't exactly a pleasant experience, but thats on Terra Onion and not SAG. I probably won't look to Terra Onion in the future unless they improve their customer support.

It's also worth noting that the SAG units were shipped by Terra Onion with glitched firmware and must be updated using Terra Onion's website. As I mentioned before, not plug and play. They're also patching, fixing, and adding things as time goes on. They've been promising NES support, but there has been no release date confirmed at the time of this review.

    Great Item. 2 caveat

Posted by Andrew Gist on Nov 11th 2021

1-The color is awful. I know it is probably due to supply shortages that we only got a semi-opaque blue, and not colors that match the consoles. So hopefully shells will surface for sale at some point.

2-Doesn't boot with a turbo ever drive in the hue card slot. Which is a bummer, cause I hate the look of an empty hue card slot, and LOVE the look of the TurboEverDrive.

I did some testing, played Cotton, and everything works great otherwise! The perfect way to make those CD games last, and preserve them for play for even more generations to come. This is a NA TGF16, it IS a tight fit, but still fits and works.

    SHDS3 Pro

This product is a must for anyone interested in the amazing pc engine library or anybody with an extensive collection they want to preserve. Simply rip your cd-roms and drop the correct files onto a sd card and you are done. The supergrafx (and now NES) support is a cool bonus. Lastly, the HDMI signal on this thing is better than any other option I have tried so far. Combine it with the scanlines that don’t suck and this is now my preferred way to play, on a big 4K TV. I have an rgb crt Duo setup and I truly and honestly think this thing looks better.
