ReSaturn PSU - Power Supply Replacement for Sega Saturn VA1-VA15

Description

After a few years in the market our Saturn consoles are growing older, and problems related to bad caps in the stock power supply, or problems with the infamous voltage regulator (prone to fail from the very beginning) are commonplace. This can affect the voltage of the CD lens and, of course,  the voltage the ICs on the motherboard need. Recapping or swapping the whole psu can obviously be a solution, but the variety of models existing makes it sometimes hard to find a match. To solve all this REXUS NEXUS designed the ReSaturn PSU, a 12v power supply that works with all Saturn revisions (from *VA1 to VA15) either NTSC-J, NTSC-US, or PAL.

12v AC/DC adapter with 5.5×2.1mm barrel size positive center tip is required and available as an option

Compatible with all ODEs (Optical disc emulators)

No soldering required

Please Note:   The optional high quality MeanWell power adapter is highly recommended by the manufacturer, who warns against using cheap power adapters with these units.  If you want to save money and use the same MeanWell adapter on all your rePSU units (ReDream, ReSaturn, RePSX, and ReN64), they are all compatible with the same power adapter.

The Saturn had 3 different sorts of PSU:

Type A (GND,GND, 3.3v, 5v, 9v)

Type B (GND,GND, 3.3v, 5v, 9v)

Type C (GND, GND, 5v, 5v, 9v/12v) or (GND, GND, 5v, 5v).

All these combinations are possible with the ReSaturn PSU, see the installation guide.

The ReSaturn includes a block connector with +5V that will allow MODE users to plug in the cable (should be included in the MODE product) for extra juice straight to the PSU. This has sorted out issues related to crackling sound with the MODE.

Please note that this design follows PCB layout best practice and that the choice of components is tailored to the specific needs of the Saturn. All components are high quality. When used with a good 12v adapter, this PSU offers a ripple+noise output of around 30mV on the 3.3v and 5v rails under load.

    Fixed the crackling audio!

Posted by Saff on Dec 12th 2024

Installation was a breeze; from opening the shell to buttoning it back up it only took about 10 minutes, though I had watched some installation videos before it arrived and had already taken a multimeter and confirmed where the jumpers needed to be for my motherboard revision. My old PSU was only providing about .01/.02 lower voltage than the ReSaturn, but perhaps it`s a more steady/``clean`` current. I`m no electrician, but it seems to be making a difference!

I was getting crackling audio during gameplay, though only when running a game off of the Satiator, disc games were fine. I suspected failing PSU, capacitors, or both, and this seemed like a good way to narrow down the issue.

Though there was some crackling briefly at first, it has since gone away and after a few hours, it still hasn`t returned! If you are experiencing the same issue with the Satiator, I strongly recommend starting with this!

I opted to pay for the ``included``, recommended power supply cable; I didn`t have a spare laying around and it saved me the trouble of finding one elsewhere. Seems to work just fine, and it`s nice to know there`s a little bit less heat inside the Saturn!

A Critical Upgrade for Aging Systems

Posted by Dan on Nov 28th 2024

Let`s face it - our childhood consoles are getting older, and it`s doing them no favors. Emulation is all well and good, but there are many of us who much prefer the visceral feel of real hardware gaming; something, it must be said, is becoming more difficult to achieve as years go by. And with prices on eBay and other auction sites going through the roof (remember when you could get a Sega 32X new for $20? Take a look at the prices now - I dare you), it`s more important than ever to keep our toys in top condition.

Power supplies are probably one of the biggest failure points for old systems; I shudder to think of how many are thrown away simply because they no longer power on. Sometimes it`s as simple as replacing a fuse, other times, capacitor failures necessitate a more intensive repair. But when a PSU fails? You`re SOL unless you can scrounge a replacement from somewhere, and even then you`re just replacing aging failed hardware with aging working hardware. It`s ultimately just a stall.

Until now. The Re-series of power supply replacements have arrived, and they solve every issue encountered, and a bit more besides.

Take this ReSaturn PSU - acting as a drop-in replacement, it replaces the internal power supply with one that can be set up for your particular revision by changing, if necessary, a maximum of two simple jumpers on the board. And instead of doing the power transformation within the console (a prime source of heat, one of the leading causes for sympathetic component failure), it outsources that to an external power supply that utilizes a common connector on a high-efficiency Meanwell power supply.

In my case, I went a slightly different route. My console required 3.3V, 5V, and 9V, so I set the jumpers accordingly. However, instead of using the Meanwell power supply, which I did not purchase, I designed and printed a replacement power jack that would accommodate a small USB-C type Power Delivery module. Set to 12V demand, I then desoldered the barrel jack and wired it up to the PD module. Plugging it into a high-quality USB C power adapter capable of delivering 12V (like the UGREEN series), I now have a functioning console with a universal power input style. I have also purchased the RePSX and RePS2 and performed similar modifications on them as well, all to great success.

This is easily one of the best things you can do for your old systems, and SAG ships quickly and has amongst the best customer service I`ve encountered - I`ve been buying from them since at least 2013 (when I pre-ordered the Famicom version of the original Everdrive N8), and will continue to do so.

    Works great! EXCEPT...

Posted by Peter Szijarto on Oct 14th 2024

The first one was defective so I`m not sure the quality control, but the customer service was FANTASTIC at resolving the issues. They reached out to the mod creators and got them to look at my pictures. They diagnosed that it was a defective 9v regulator failure, since my Saturn didn`t need that 9v. I def recommend buying from Stone Age Gamer just for the support alone.

Simple installation and great customer service.

Posted by Callen on Sep 26th 2024

My original PSU was making some really concerning noise and for safety reasons I needed a replacement. The first PSU I received refused to work with my console, but customer support was very helpful and I ended up opting for a replacement unit. The second one took a bit of fiddling, but is now working great and doesn`t make any concerning noises. I believe the issue was related to my specific console, possibly the power button itself. The installation was very simple, needing only a screwdriver, and only takes about 10 minutes. One thing worth noting is that some console revisions won`t be able to screw the unit to the console`s shell like the original since the new PSU is significantly smaller and doesn`t overlap with the original screw hole.

    works great

Just don’t make the mistake I did and read what you are getting carefully. I have a japanese model saturn that this doesn’t come with an adapter for. It clearly stated it in the website description that I glossed over.

Sourced the additional parts I needed elsewhere and it works with 0 issues. I have a quality power supply for it, no noise from bad power, system runs cooler now.

    Works Great

I purchased this to swap out the PSU in my Japanese Saturn that I`m using in the US. I had some concerns about running it on 120v for longer periods. The install was easy and everything seems to work fine. The Saturn is also using a Fenrir and an Action Replay and everything still works great. No complaints.

Extended the life of my Saturn

Posted by Frank L. on Mar 10th 2023

The caps on my Saturn`s PSU were getting pretty old and are of notoriously dodgy quality. The ReSaturn is an easy to install mod that extends the lifespan of your console.

You can use this PSU to make sure you`re feeding your Saturn the voltage it needs, no matter your region, as long as you have the correct 12v power brick, which is easy do find.

    Awesome product!
