Great Shell to Replace and Upgrade for NES OEM Shell

Posted by Nick on Aug 4th 2024

This was a very nice replacement and aesthetic upgrade to the original OEM NES Shell. Fitment was pretty good, and product was very well packaged when shipped. Color is what I had expected as well.

This would warrant a higher rating, and I think it`s necessary to highlight a few things if you`re considering this shell or any other shell that`s available. I knew going in that this would not be the same as OEM and that I`d have a higher margin for tolerance of issues with fitment, features, issues, etc. for replacement shells:

First, would be that there`s no actual packaging for the product itself. Stone Age Gamer does a phenomenal job packing the product to ensure that it does not get damaged, nor any scratches occur on the shell.

Product does not come with any instructions. A simple search will help you find guides or videos of how to tear down your NES to transplant into the new shell. Take note that the screw holes are not threaded and will require a proper screwdriver to help with not stripping the heads. Also make sure that you`re using the correct amount of force as well. I did shear off one screw head that did not affect the securing of the console or break any of the screw holes.

Others have reported the cartridge lid not staying up when open and/or it feels loose. This was something that I had experienced as well and to be aware of. I haven`t remedied this yet, but others say to use some electrical tape to get better engagement for the lid.

If you want to have access the Expansion Port on the bottom of the new shell, you will have to remove the cover that is there. Some wire cutters and a file will be your friend here. Take it slow and you`ll be fine. Not really a con, but something to be aware of. Also note that while the NES may come with a cover for the Expansion Port, the new shell does not have one that is similar. You will have to transplant this over if you`re looking to maintain that.

In some of the pictures in all of the replacement shells (whether you`re getting smoke, clear, or red), you`ll notice that above the controller ports and at the rear (above power, channel selector and RF output), it looks solid black and not transparent. What comes with the shell are transparent versions of these (that match the color you`ve purchased). If you want to achieve the same look that you see in the product images, you`ll need to transplant those over as well. Hope that this clears up any confusion if you`re considering picking up any of these.

Shell also does not come with any labels that you`d find on the bottom of the OEM NES shell. With any replacement shell, this is pretty standard

Also noticed a small imperfection dent on the opening for where the lid goes. It`s not visible unless you remove the lid completely. Other than that, it doesn`t impede function of the lid or prevent cartridges from being put in and removed.

Lastly, the shell does not come with any rubber feet. You`ll have to source these elsewhere so that your console doesn`t slide around when you`re putting in or removing your cartridges.

One other thing to note, if you want to see more of the internals of the console, people tend to not reinstall the RF shielding. I`ve opted not to reinstall mine and I feel like it gives it a better aesthetic versus if the shielding was there.

Hope the review helps! Happy console modding!

An amazing case, with a couple of caveats

Posted by Pat Ferguson on Jul 24th 2024

The NES Smoke Replacement Console Shell is a fantastic modification to reinvigorate the love and enjoyment of playing your original front loader NES. For those wishing to couple this mod with the NESRGB with SNES Multi-Out connector, be aware that there is already a rectangle piece that you can clip out and sand down in this case. Very cool! Some users point out that you may have to file this opening a bit further to fit the voultar NESRGB QSB FFC connector, but the fact that the hole is already provided, this is a great headstart for that. The case did come with 6 screws for putting the final top and bottom halves together, but you will need screws from your old NES to screw down the board, and cartridge loading mechanism. I even opted to widen a couple holes where the power and reset switch mechanism gets screwed down because they felt a bit too snug, and I didn`t want to strip any screws, or worse, break the screw holes. Lastly, you will also need the tiny screws and metal pieces from your old NES that hold the flip top lid in place, and like others have pointed out, the smoke lid can feel a bit loose when installed. Some have wrapped electrical tape around the parts of the lid to reinforce the grip, but honestly, this is not a huge issue anyway. I absolutely love the final look of my NES, and recommend this mod for anyone looking to give your NES the best 40th birthday present you can give it!!

    Great shell

Case came in quick and it was very easy to assemble. The NES shielding is not required so it looks great with just the board.

Nintendo NES Replacement Console Shell - Smoke

Posted by Justin Steimer on Dec 20th 2023

Amazing looking shell! Easy to assemble with the guts from a donor console. My only gripes are that the cart door is extremely loose and usually doesn`t stay up by itself and it doesn`t come with the rubber feet for the bottom of the console.
