Everdrive64 X7 (Base Gray) DeLuxe Edition

Posted by Otto Vaessen on Nov 23rd 2020

This cartridge plays almost all N64 ROMs without any problems. In addition, it is one of the few MSD cartreaders for the Nintendo 64 that also plays homebrews ROMs. I ordered the deluxe edition and received the cartridge with a protective storage case with an fullcolor printed manual. It is region neutral and plays all ROMs from Europe, America and Japan. As far I know, this is one of the few everdrives for the Nintendo 64 that can save games to the MSD card without putting the reset button on the console first. In addition, this cartridge has an internal clock which is very useful for some games.

    EverDrive 64 X7

Its a fairly straight forward product that works great, and is easy to use. I have bought a few of the 2.5 versions as gifts and was so impressed that I wanted an X7 for myself. Not having to hit the reset button to save games is a simple, but great upsell for me. I sold my entire N64 game collection and used the proceeds to pick this up....and had extra left over. This is well worth the investment to never change a cart again if not for any other reason. I have not tried the NES emulation, so can't comment on that feature.

The cheapest way to play any N64 game.

I bought the basic model and it works perfectly fine. Been playing "LoZ Ocarina of Time" (version 1.0) with no problems. Just keep in mind any micro SD card over 30GB will not work with ANY EverDrive by default. You'll need a special formatting pc program for that.

    Excellent Device

All the ROMs I have tried worked flawlessly. I have also used this to backup/restore my controller pack before replacing the battery. Using a sandisk micro sdcard, it worked right away so i did not have to try any others. The case and label are very clean looking, aside from the sdcard slot this would could be mistaken for any other n64 cart.

Everything you could ever want and need

This is the highest quality you can get. Being able to play every single N64 game on an actual N64 is a dream come true. I just remember back in the 90's thinking that some day I will own every single game ever made, and sure enough that day has come. Stone Age Gamer has created a dedicated customer in me. I can't wait to see what they come out with next!

    Review from John Grandy

This is a great product that can play any N64 rom on your TV. What's not to love?
Unfortunately I had to deduct one star because the SD card that comes with it had some compatibility issues. Basically, upon resetting the N64, or sometimes even powering off and back on, I would get an error message on my TV: "Everdrive 64 - bootloader v4 Error: F0." In order to fix it, I would have to reformat my SD card and reinstall the everdrive OS, as well as my roms.
After doing some research on the Everdrive forums on the Krikzz website, I learned that this tends to happen with newer SD cards, specifically ones with the roman numeral 1 on the front of them. The reason is because the internal processing speed of the SD card is faster than the speed of the firmware on the Everdrive 64, so the Everdrive cannot keep up with the SD card and gets the error message.
In order to fix this issue, I started holding the reset button on my N64 upwards of 10 seconds or more in order to let the Everdrive's speed catch up with the SD card. This worked and I have had no more errors since!

There are a few other important things users should be aware of:
    1) Unlike emulators, such as project 64, the Everdrive 64 requires that you unzip the roms first, before you copy them onto the SD card. Otherwise they won't play and you will receive a message - "Please unzip rom" - or something like that.
    2) When using the Everdrive 64 in your N64, DO NOT mess with any of the icons in your ED64 folder, such as the OS.64V64. I also got an error from doing this and had to reformat the SD card.

Despite all of the technical issues, I absolutely love this device since I've gotten it working. The N64 is probably my favorite system ever and I'm having a blast replaying tons of games that I lost years ago on the actual system.
One thing I would recommend for the StoneAgeGamer to do is to send a manual with it as well. Customers who are less tech-savvy than me may get frustrated by not being able to get it running and want to send it back. I would have appreciated it a lot when I was dealing with all the errors from the SD cards. Other than that, it's a great device and I'm glad I got it working since it was so expensive.

Just received the everdrive. Works very well but its kind of picky when its about Sd cards, i had problems setting up a kingston card, but when i plugged in a Adata card it worked perfectly
