Better than OEM, Read The Instructions

Posted by Samson Wick on Jan 1st 2025

My OEM power supplies work just fine, but one of them is a bit loose which can cause the consoles to be a little fiddly. I`ve had my eye on this for a good long while and the Black Friday discount finally convinced me to pull the trigger.

When I first saw this many years ago I thought it was taking advantage of the fact that USB-C has modes that allow for carrying 12V, however this adapter operates strictly on 5V. In fact it will not work with any of the USB-C to USB-C cables or USB-C power supplies I own (even the USB-C power supplies that only provide 5V) - the only cables it will work with are USB-A to USB-C cables.

This is all spelled out in the instructions if you take the time to read them (which I did not), but it`s actually pretty typical. Lots of devices that have USB-C power ports work this way.

It requires a 2A supply because of the current loss that comes from converting 5V to the 12V and -12V that the Colecovision needs.

This product has quite a few tick marks in the ``con`` side of the equation. For starters it`s very expensive. Way more expensive than buying and refurbishing an OEM power supply. Even at its high price point it doesn`t include the cable or power supply - though I appreciate that SAG has compatible options available for a very reasonable upcharge.

On the ``pro`` side, it fits more securely in the power socket than OEM supplies, AND it provides noticeably cleaner power. The audio buzz of the console is considerably quieter with the COLUSB than with the OEM supply.

Rebuilding OEM power supplies isn`t for everyone. You have to saw the brick open, and assuming the coil is okay, replace several voltage regulators, diodes and capacitors, then find a way to seal it all back up. If that`s not your cup of tea, you basically have two options - roll the dice on Ebay/Mercari with another old power brick, or shell out 2.5x as much on a COLUSB but have a guaranteed solution like this. If you go this route, I highly recommend just getting the cable and power supply from SAG as well so you don`t have to fuss with trying to find one that works and probably spending more in the process.

great alternate PSU for your Colecovision, just be sure to use a USB C to USB A cable, wouldn`t work with a USB C to USB C cable

    Awesome!

It's just so nice to not have a giant power brick taking up so much real estate. EZPZ.

It's way lighter than I thought it would be. It feels like some kind of foam but I don't think it's that.

Also, how do I know how many amps my power supply has? I guess if the console turns on I'm ok.

    Coleco USB

I bought this for my Colecovision when my power supply kicked the bucket. It is undoubtedly 3D printed, but so far it works great and sits in the console firmly. The main thing I recommend is getting a really long Type C cable with it along with it to make the system easier to play. (Those controller cables are really short.) Otherwise check to see if your powerplug is atleast 2AMPs. Overall an excellent product and I can highly recommend it.

Small, light, reliable, long lasting. By far the best way to power your Colecovision.
