Nintendo Switch Online: GameCube Wishlist
Nintendo recently unveiled the Switch 2, and while a ton of digital ink has been spilled about the negatives of this system, one of the highlights was the inclusion of the GameCube in the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) library. The initial lineup of games Nintendo is including is a decent, if small, selection. Nintendo also announced that Super Mario Sunshine, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, Luigi's Mansion plus more would be coming to the platform. But what less obvious games should be added? Well, dear readers, that's what we're here to discuss. Submitted for your approval is a list of three games I think will probably come to the NSO GameCube service.

Viewtiful Joe is one of the most fun titles on the GameCube. The premise is relatively simple, you play as Joe, a movie buff, who gets sucked into Movieland while watching an old Captain Blue movie at a theater with his girlfriend Sylvia. There, you become the superhero Viewtiful Joe and proceed to kick-ass in a gorgeously cel-shaded, 2.5D platforming beat ‘em up. Joe gains VFX powers throughout the game, it is a movie after all, that allow him to slow down or speed up time, among others, to enhance the combat. Viewtiful Joe is ridiculously cool and a blast to play and would make a welcome addition to Nintendo Switch Online. (For more on VJ check out the Stone Age Gamer Podcast Alphabet Soup-er Series)
Skies of Arcadia: Legends is a GameCube port of a Dreamcast game and one of the best RPGs on the system. While not exactly breaking new ground, Skies of Arcadia follows the traditional turn-based RPG format in story and combat, but what really makes this game stand out are the characters. The character interactions, particularly with the main crew, make this game deeply engaging. Vyse, Aika, and Fina are written in such a way as to make them instantly familiar yet just mysterious enough to make you want to push on to discover more. The Legends port fixed some of the concerns from the original and added additional content. Skies has been absent since its GameCube release and would make a welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch Online service.
Cubivore is one of the strangest games on any Nintendo platform and that's saying something. The game sees players take control of a square pig? who is tasked with traveling the world and eating other Cubivores in order to mutate, mate, and evolve. This is not a random system however, as the player is in control of which limbs of which color their character eats, influencing the mutation and offspring path and allowing progress through the story. It's a wild game that has developed a cult following due to its scarcity and the frankly insane nature of its story and gameplay. It's exactly the type of game that belongs on the Nintendo Switch Online service.
But I want to know what you think. What games do you want to see on the service? Join the Stone Age Gamer discord, or you can find me on Bluesky to let me know your thoughts. See you in two weeks.
