This is the D6 Wireless Gamepad from Retro Fighters. It’s a modern 2.4GHz wireless solution for the Sega Dreamcast with a compact, retro-inspired design. Here’s a closer look.
This is the controller itself. It’s effectively a combination between the original Dreamcast and Saturn controller designs. Its form factor mimics a Saturn controller, with 6 face buttons, the placement of the Start button, and D-pad layout. The four primare face buttons from the Dreamcast controller are color coded to match their original layout, with two additional buttons mimicking the trigger buttons placed at the end, with shoulder buttons placed at the top that perform the same function. As there is no analog stick on the D6, a switch at the bottom can be toggled to make the D-pad mimic analog stick movements of you choose.
One major difference between the original Saturn and Dreamcast controllers is the “clicky” nature of the buttons, similar to the joystick found on a NeoGeo Pocket Color. This means that inputting commands requires less pressure than original controllers.
The D6 also doesn’t have its own dedicated VMU port, which has instead been incorporated into the receiver dongle. Here’s how it works.
Plug the dongle into your Dreamcast console, insert a VMU if you plan on using one, then turn it on. Once your controller has been synced, press the button on the top of your controller to activate, and you’re ready to begin playing.
