Sega Genesis Replacement Console Shell

Replace your broken or beat-up console shell with a brand new transparent version!

Note: Here is a tutorial to disassemble the SEGA MegaDrive/Genesis mainboard: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Sega+Genesis+Motherboard+Replacement/3770

Warning: Do NOT use the Diagonal pliers to cut the acrylic!!!

The back panel of Genesis/MegaDrive is made of laser cutting acrylic.

The best way to cut it is using a knife carefully, if you try another method you may risk breaking it.

For a basic guide and overview, check out this video by Retro RGB which shows the assembly of the Genesis shell as well as others:

Please Note: System hardware (Genesis motherboard) is NOT included but is pictured so you can see what the shell looks like with the hardware installed.

    Not the greatest replacement case

Posted by Chris on May 15th 2023

Compared to the PC engine or the SNES replacement cases, this one falls very short. It doesn`t quite align correctly, there are sharp edges in the cartridge port. Once fitted, the buttons don`t quite reach the inner buttons leaving you with unsatisfying button presses.

The reset button will _not_ fit, and will depress and not raise.

I do _not_ recommend buying this. I`m only saddened that I`m way outside of a return window for this.

    Another nightmare.

When all said and done it does look kinda cool. Some boards do not fit then again I'm not familiar with all Model 1 boards. Mine had factory bodge wires and a very large heatsink for the voltage regulators. The heatsink comes off via screws and to be replaced by the included cheap looking heat sinks. Don't forget to apply thermal paste when installing the new heat sinks. It comes with 2 laser cut backplates for various 1601 models. They break very easily. The shell does come with a volume slider and led that pops in and out but no reset or power switches. Here's my big gripe. My reset button tends to stick in the shell making it worthless. Tried another switch same thing. Worked fine in the original shell. At this point I don't know what do about a reset switch. When assembling, getting the backplate to cooperate is a real chore. Another issue is the power plug board. There is no real way to keep place used Teflon tape to keep it place. Did mention it's a finger print magnet? Not the greatest experience but if the shell it not cut properly you're SOL...
