How do I know if I have a 20 or 21 pin Console?

20 pin drives are motherboard revisions VA0, VA0.5, VA0.8, VA1.
Please note some VA1 revisions come with a 21 pin drive instead of a 20 pin drive.
In order to find out if your console has a 20 pin drive without opening it, you can look for a screw at the back, next to the power supply socket.
If you see 3 screws, then it’s a 20 pin VA0. If not, then you need to check that the power and reset buttons are oval in shape and not round.
Another way to check, is to open the CD lid and look towards the back of the cd mechanism, to the gap on its right side.
If you see a white ribbon cable running towards the back, then you have a 20 pin drive.
If none of the above helps, then you most likely have a VA1 console and you need to open it to make sure your drive uses a 20 pin ribbon.

How to update the firmware

Updating your Fenrir Duo's board’s Firmware, is incredibly easy.Tools Required:

  • A microSD card, FAT32 formatted
  • A computer (Windows, OS X or Linux) with a microSD or SD card slot with adapter
  • The latest Firmware Update.bin file, which you can download from here

1. Insert your microSD card to your computer’s card reader. The drive will show up on your Computer (Windows) or the Desktop (OS X).

2. Open it with Windows Explorer / Finder / File Browser.

3. Drag the “update.bin” file to your SD card.

4. Safely eject the card.

5. Make sure your Sega Saturn is turned off. Insert your microSD card to the Fenrir Duo microSD card slot.

6. Turn on your Sega Saturn. The animation won’t play. After a while, you will see the Saturn Bios screen.

7. Select “Start Application”. The firmware update is done!

A solid ODE at a good price

Posted by Joe Fenton on Nov 24th 2025

The Fenrir Duo ODE is a very simple, but solid device that allows you to run CD images from a micro-SD card. It`s very easy to install, but I`d recommend getting the bracket to make inserting and removing the SD card easier. The bracket fills the space the CD filled, so you don`t have a large gap where the CD was. It also positions the SD card to be easier to insert and remove without accidentally losing the card inside the Saturn. The bracket and ODE take only a couple minutes to install, with most of the time being removing the screws from the bottom of the Saturn case.

The menu itself is a bit rudimentary, but gets the job done. Some people suggest Fenrir Loader Kai for more features, but the Fenrir menu is simple and easy to use. One caveat - you need to get the updated firmware file from the discord site. The latest firmware on the Fenrir site does not work with the Duo.

    Great ODE

Posted by Reviewer on Oct 30th 2025

Fast shipping and the mounting bracket worked like a charm. With the latest firmware I have no issues with any of my Saturn games in CCD+IMG format, although I couple will only start if I press Z instead of A. This triggers full boot instead of the normal fast boot.

Installation took only a few minutes. The 3D print quality of the bracket is good

    Fantastic ODE

Posted by Lindsey C. on Oct 3rd 2025

Works brilliantly on my 21 pin Japanese Saturn. Installation is one of the simplest I've seen for a device like this, at least once you figure out what you're doing. I was under the assumption all firmwares would work for this, but make sure you choose the firmware with the name of your model (in my case, the Duo), or it won't work! That sounds simple, but the confusing Fenrir installation guide and lack of documentation online for it (and the Saturn in general lol) made it a little tough for me to figure it out. Once I got past that hurdle though, it's really as simple as plugging in the power supply and the ribbon cable. I got mine with the 3D printed mount, and it makes the microSD card extremely accessible from the outside, and it makes it feel much more secure than it would otherwise be. My only qualm with the mount is that the pins take quite a *lot* of force to fit, but once they're in, *they're in*. As for the software, I'd recommend loading Fenrir Loader Kai as I find it easier to work with than the stock firmware. Load times are super fast with my 256 GB microSD card. Highly recommended!!

    Essential upgrade

Posted by Christopher on Sep 22nd 2025

Saturn hardware is coming up on 30 years old, and the optical drive is a moving part that wears out. Fenrir Duo is a drop-in replacement with super simple installation that makes your console better than new: silent operation, faster load times, and no more fragile discs!

No soldering or special tools required, just a screwdriver. Definitely get the mounting bracket with it so that your install looks clean and professional.

    Awesome ODE

Posted by Alex on Sep 10th 2025

FENRIR DUO ODE FOR SEGA SATURN is an ODE for Saturn. It is easy to install and easy to use. It took me longer to take the Saturn case off than it did to actually install the Fenrir. Highly recommend for anyone looking to easily have access to the Saturn's game library.

    Fenrir Duo JP Saturn Project

Posted by Richard Gillum on Jul 8th 2025

I have recently gotten back in to my now retro gaming systems after pulling them from storage. A long time avid PC gamer, a recent hand injury left my left hand with severed nerves and unable to use the keyboard for serious gaming on my PC so I went back to controllers and consoles... That said, led me down a huge rabbit hole of combining my PC gaming service tech side and custom builder side with my old skool gaming console side and have combined the two. upgraded my JP project Saturn with a Fenrir Duo, a ReSaturn PSU and some other custom mods. The installation is relatively easy for anyone who has taken something apart and worked on it but if your just a plug and play type, this may be challenging. I highly recommend this ODE(a true ODE) over others on the market. I also plan on upgrading a couple more and selling to freinds. This site is fantastic source of gaming tech and stuff. I hope to visit the store someday!
