Three Great Things About Mega Man 4

Three Great Things About Mega Man 4

3 minute read

At long last, there's a new mainline Mega Man game in the works. Mega Man: Dual Override (basically Mega Man 12) is on its way in 2027, and as a huge fan of the Blue Bomber's classic adventures, I couldn't be more excited. And what do I do when I'm excited? I look back on how we got here!

For the next, well, however long it's going to take for Dual Override to come into existence, I'm going to be running through the entire classic series of Mega Man games and coming up with 3 things I like about them. Obviously, there will be some games that I like more than 3 things about. But in the interest of brevity, I'm sticking with the first three that come to mind.

So, without further ado, here are three great things about Mega Man 4.

Pharaoh Man

I know this sounds nuts, but I don’t love Mega Man 4 on the whole. There's something about its presentation that just doesn't work for me, especially as a followup to the near-perfect Mega Man 3. However, Pharaoh Man is just plain great. He’s got cool moves, an absolutely awesome stage with kick-ass music, a killer weapon, and he strikes that super-cool disco pose at the beginning of each battle. From the mummy monsters, to the awesome-looking quick sand, Pharaoh Man and his stage are clear highlights in the classic Mega Man franchise.

The Toad Man fight

I almost can’t even believe how stupid this battle is. Literally all you have to do it keep shooting him and he’ll never attack you. He’s even easier to beat than Bubble Man on easy mode. He’s a pretty goofy design too, and his little rain dance is just precious. This may sound like a complaint, but it’s just absurd enough to make it one of the things I love most about this game.

At least this time they pretended it wasn’t Dr. Wily

Dr. Wily didn’t have anything to do with these robot masters! No, this time it’s Dr. Cossack! What’s so funny about this isn’t that it really was Wily all along, but even if it was Dr. Cossack, how would that have really been a shakeup? He’s still a robot scientist in a lab coat! Once again, the absurdity of it all brings a smile to my face.

And that wraps up my three things about Mega Man 4. Come back next time as we look at the next Game Boy game that mashes up both 3 and 4 on NES. See you then!
