Backup your games and pair this with a everdrive!
I love this. I was able to transfer my old Pokemon games to my PC, play them on Retroarch, earn Retro Achievements, use PKHex to edit in event Pokemon that are now otherwise impossible to catch, and then transfer the playthrough back to my cartridges (you'll need to replace the battery if you haven't already, but that's not too hard. A little Googling will yield instructions). It's fantastic!
It's super simple: plop the adapter into the Retrode 2, plop your Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance game into the adapter's slot, plug in your Retrode 2 to your PC, and you can make a backup of your cart with no issue. I was able to make copies of all of my old Game Boy games and Game Boy saves from the 90s, so I don't have to worry about losing that save data anymore.
The one big caveat is that GBA save data backup is NOT supported, so unfortunately you'll have to look for another solution for that.
As time goes on the batteries in gameboy games die, and this means you'll lose your pokemon data no matter what, with this you don't have to worry about that, all you do is set the retrode to the lower voltage switch and plug this in and your game, it dumps the files and then you put them on your computer!
I was finally able to pick up a Retrode recently and this was a no-brainer to be able to back up my Gameboy collection. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars was it apparently can't read save files on GBA carts, at least according to the My Life in Gaming channel on YouTube (I haven't actually tried myself after seeing their video).
It's true that this is good for creating backups of your Gameboy games & game saves but you can also write saves back onto the cartridge but I should mention the saves are not supported with gba games at the moment but with this adapter I was able to transfer my Pokémon Gen 1 & 2 saves to an emulator and get the other 2 starter Pokémon using the features of emulation and then transfer the save back to the physical cartridge which is insane
Used this to rip a handful of GBA cartridges. Worked perfectly.
