Where Are All the Updates?

Where Are All the Updates?

Updates and DLC can be problematic. There are so many games that just feel unfinished at launch, and then they have those missing parts sold to you over time. That’s a genuinely awful thing, and it’s awful that it keeps happening. However, DLC isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, in some circumstances, it’s great! When a game comes out and it feels complete on its own, but then it continues to get supported with additional content if you want? That’s wonderful. Vampire Survivors does this. Splatoon has a great free DLC cycle. It’s absolutely possible to make DLC a good thing.

So when a game comes out that clearly could stand some good old fashioned DLC and it doesn’t get it, I’m frequently baffled. Maybe the game didn’t sell extremely well so spending the time and money on creating DLC wouldn’t be worth it? Sure, that’s a possibility, but the games I’m looking at today aren’t that. These are games that were successful, and still were left without some very obvious DLC options.

Kirby’s Dream Buffet

This game is great. It’s a super fun Kirby racing game about eating food and becoming as fat as possible. It’s a blast, and it was worth every penny I paid for it. It has a ton of unlockable stuff in it, and its core gameplay is a blast as-is. However, there are a few things that would have been great to see as additional content.

Again, I can’t stress enough, this game feels complete as-is, but it would have been so cool to have some additional courses to blast through. Maybe even some less food themed ones that harken back to Kirby’s past. The soundtrack is positively bursting at the seams with tunes from every facet of Kirby’s history (there’s even music from Kirby’s Pinball Land!) So more stages to match would have been cool.

But more than anything, I can’t believe this game isn’t 4-players locally. That just seemed like the kind of thing that would have come up with DLC or even a basic update at some point. It’s really the only thing about this game I couldn’t believe wasn’t included out of the gate.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Yes, this game got plenty of DLC, but following its surprise runaway success on Switch, it’s shocking to me that they stopped updating it so soon. There was still so much they could have done! How cool would it have been to get alternate music options from previous Animal Crossing games? How about more dialogue for all the characters? Let’s add a seashell wing to the museum! Let’s throw some more unique events into the mix! There’s no end to the amount of stuff they could have tossed in there to keep people playing even longer. I know I’d be thrilled to have an excuse to turn that game on again.

Ring Fit Adventure

Talk about a game that has plenty of features out of the box! Ring Fit adventure is a wonderful game with tons of content. But considering how ridiculously successful it was, it’s wild that it got so little in terms of post-launch content. There’s stuff to do once you finish the main campaign, but there could absolutely be more. RPGs get story DLC all the time now! So why not Ring Fit?

Clubhouse Games

Okay, Clubhouse Games isn't exactly a runaway success, but it could have easily become one of those slow burn evergreen titles with just a little more content! This game gets a ton of play around my house, and with all the time we’ve spent with it, it never stops feeling like just a little more would have gone a very long way. Like, why isn’t Yahtzee, err, Yacht Dice 4 player? Heck, why are there so few 4 player games in general? Why can’t each player sign in with their own accounts like in Big Brain Academy? Why can’t Pro Controllers be used in multiplayer?

Fixing these little things and adding a handful of new games to the mix would make Clubhouse Games more of a must have than it already is, and I can’t imagine this kind of stuff is all that complicated to pull off. What gives?

Nintendo Switch Sports

This game got some DLC too, but there’s so much more to do! Remember Wii Sports Resort? That had a metric ton of events in it! We got golf and I think Volleyball added to Switch Sports, and sure, they’re great, but where’s the rest? Why can’t I toss a frisbee to an adorable dog on the beach? Where’s my Archery, gosh dang it? Also, why can’t we earn outfits by paying offline? That's a huge part of why we stopped playing it as much as we were because we wanted to play together as a family in the same room, not online against strangers, but we also wanted to keep unlocking stuff. So if we wanted new outfits, we were stuck having to try and unlock them while playing on our own. We can’t be the only ones with that issue, right?

Mario Party Superstars

Just add more boards.

Seriously, what the heck, Nintendo? This is by far the biggest head scratcher of them all. This game sold a bajillion copies, and I’m fairly certain a sizable portion of those who purchased it would gladly toss a couple bucks at some level packs. The whole premise of this game is gussied up versions of older Mario Party tables. You don’t even need to make new stuff! Just work your magic on some more classic boards and boom! Instant profits and happy customers.

I thought maybe they were holding off for a Mario Party Superstars 2, but no! This thing came out in 2021, and there hasn’t been another one yet! It’s insanity!

What games do you wish were still being updated? Should there continue to be balance updates for Smash Bros. Ultimate? Should there have been more missions added to Tears of the Kingdom? Does that “Extra Game Styles” window in Super Mario Maker 2 still drive you crazy? Let us know!
